B.C wine of the week!

TIGHTROPE  Pinot Gris 2017

The Wine Season has started and nothing better than beginning a tasting at Tightrope Winery on the Naramata Bench. Lindsay O’Rourke had poured some of her wines about 3 years ago at the Van International Wine Festival and I was excited to visit the winery and see how  how they were progressing.

The wine Tasting room is Bright, inviting and Modern! The Winery grows mostly Pinot Gris, Viognier,Riesling, Pinot Noir and some Cabernet Franc and Barbera for their Blends.

Pinot Gris is the Premier White Grape Wine in B.C. and no doubt we do it well. I loved the Quality of this Pinot Gris. The nose is Green apple, citrus, passionflower. It’s has a light Lemon hue and is more dry  than off-Dry. The palate is Cactus pear, Lemongrass with an excellent  balance of Bright Acidity!

No wonder they are getting accolades.

Tinhorn Creek

Gewürztraminer 2016

This vintage of Gew reads like a textbook Alsacean Gew. Absolutely great balance of fruit and sweetness. The nose is a fragrant rose petals and a hint of tropical fruit. The palate weighs in with decent weight and perfect amounts of sweetness. Lychee, citrus peel and apricot, with a hint of spice continue to a long fruity satisfying finish .  don’t let this beauty fool you with 14% alcohol..

It is a great little sipping wine but also would be amazing with some crab and South Asian dishes

                                                             Meritage 2015

This fine Meritage expresses itself through the star of the Show the Malbec from Haynes Vineyard in Osoyoos ! About 38% Malbec and 37% Merlot 20% Cab Sauvignon and 5% Franc

I loved the way this Bordeaux Style blend came together! Rich and ripe fruit abound with a distinct earthy terroir  from the area coming throughOn the nose, ripe blueberries, rose petals, thyme and a trace of Leather.  The Richness on the palate is what i Love. Ripe tannins with blackberry, black pepper and a lasting finish. A must try with St. Agur Cheese! yum!

THE HATCH WINES in UCLUELET

This weekend our run to Vancouver island was a real treat! First it was my partner’s Birthday and I treated him to a Storm watching weekend in Ucluelet. The Weather was stellar  on Saturday with bright blue skies and some clouds with just a bit of Wind to watch the Coast line seas churning  as we hiked the West coast Trail!

Our stay at The Black Rock resort (named for the Black Lava Rock along the coastline) was fabulous!  We had a King suite with a fireplace and enormous bathroom Luxury Tub included.

We had the pleasure of drinking some Local wines available at the resortThe Hatch Pinot noir was certainly a wonderful surprise and will certainly be an addition in my cellar! The Hatch is a  Quirky and funky winery located  in Kelowna.  Back to the Pinot ! I Loved the Silky smooth Bowl of Cherries in my mouth ! Quite an elegant Pinot really!  The acidity was clean and finish excellent. It was fantastic to Drink all by itself ! But a warning to you once you have had it you won’t want to drink anything else!   Under the Screaming Frenzy label they also served up the Meritage in The Float Lounge high above the Cliffs with Sweeping views of the Pacific ocean before us !  The Meritage was Medium/full bodied with Blackberry and Herbal notes with  47% Cab. Franc, 36% Cab. Sauv, 10% Merlot and 7% Malbec from their  Osoyoos Vineyard! It has bold Tannins with a great Structure! Enjoyable with our Elk Osso Bucco at the Fetch restaurant that Evening !

If you have not taken in Ucluelet in January you might want to consider it . Plenty of things to do and Great Restaurants for a tiny sleepy January Town !Don’t Forget to eat at Howlers’ Family Restaurant open until Midnight with Great Food ! Have a game of Bowling afterward in the lanes attached to the place

Happy February to all

Gigi

Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Coyote Bowl Vineyard

A goodie in my Cellar..( tasted Jan 2018)

A serious Good Cabernet is hard to find and I feel like everyone comes into the store and they find out we only carry B.C Cabs they recoil in disappointment. I am here to tell you that B.C can make anything! Yes that is how diverse our climate and terroirs are.. .   About 15 % of our vineyards in B.C are dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon.

The cool thing is that Osoyoos ( Black Sage Bench where Coyote Bowl Is ) gets roughly about 1535 hours of (GDD) growing degree days.  Directly in line with Napa California ‘s (GDD) of 1450.   So here is a great example of a Cabernet Sauvignon B.C with Kim Pullen at the Helm.

The first sniff is a fragrant nose of Black Currant and cassis This ruby red wine has intensity with savoury and Sage notes, Spice and Coffee and green beans. The finish was long with great structure and balanced tannins.

Duet 2016

This year’s Wine releases will be very exciting as the Summer was one of the Hottest on Record In B.C

I am looking forward to adding Vancouver Island to my list of reviews as I will be taking a trip there  in a few weeks.

So Duet was very much not what I expected.  A blend of Syrah and Cabernet Franc cold fermented in 80 % Stainless Steel and 20 % American Oak. The Wine was medium weight with notes  Red Berries, Twig and Earth. The Palate has a creamy texture with light Tannins and a zip of pepper,

The finish is a not lengthy , however a very unique and pleasing wine  . I would recommend trying this with your Steak or Osso Buco

2014 Eau Vivre Pinot Noir
This winery is unfortunately no longer in business, however there are still a few bottles of this wine around here and there and it is well worth your time to hunt them down as this is one of the finest Okanagan Pinot Noirs that I have tasted.
I include the winery notes here as they very accurately echo my own. “The 2014 Pinot Noir is medium garnet in colour featuring intense aromas of cherry, cranberry and spice. Bright fruit flavours of fresh red berries, orange zest and clove are complimented with the wines lively acidity.
This winery has won numerous awards including the Lieutenant Governor’s Award twice for their Pinot Noir as well as Double Gold in the International Pinot Challenge. Get it while you can!
